Export and Render a Narrated MP4 Video

Last updated

In short

  • Export renders your project into a standard MP4.
  • The render runs in your browser, so keep that tab open until it finishes.
  • Choose Best quality (up to 2K), 1080p, or 720p.
  • The Free plan adds a small watermark and includes 3 exports per video. Paid plans export without limit and without the watermark.

Export turns your edited project into a finished video file. This step is called rendering. The result is a standard MP4 that plays anywhere.

How to export

Click export in the editor. ScreenDub renders the video and shows you the progress. Longer videos take longer, and burning captions in adds a little time.

The render happens in your browser, in the tab you are looking at. Leave that tab open until it finishes. Closing it stops the render, and you would need to start again.

Rendering in the browser is why the preview and the finished file match exactly. The same code draws both, so there is no surprise waiting in the download.

Choosing the quality

Best quality
Up to 2K
1080p
Full HD
720p
Smaller file

Best quality is the default. Drop to 1080p or 720p when you need a smaller file, for example for email or a slow connection.

Captions at export

When you export, you choose how to handle captions. You can skip them, burn them in, or get a separate subtitle file alongside the video. See Captions for the details.

Watermark

The Free plan adds a small "Created using ScreenDub.io" mark to exports. Every paid plan exports with no watermark, and paid plans can put their own logo there instead. See the pricing page.

Exports on the Free plan

On the Free plan, each video includes 3 exports. The editor shows how many exports a video has left next to the download button, so the limit is never a surprise. Paid plans export without limit, so you can re-export after every tweak.

Editing your script after you export clears the rendered file. This keeps the download in step with your latest changes. Just export again when you are done editing.

If something goes wrong

My export failed partway through.

Open the project and export again. Make sure the tab stays open and your computer does not sleep while it runs.

My download is out of date.

An edit after export clears the old file. Export once more to get a fresh copy with your latest changes.

The export is slow.

Rendering happens on your own machine, so it depends on your computer. Closing heavy tabs and other apps helps. A lower quality setting also renders faster.

It says I have no exports left.

Free-plan videos include 3 exports each. Once they are used, upgrade to any paid plan for unlimited exports of every video.
