Guided documentation

In short
- The same project also becomes a written step-by-step guide you download as a PDF.
- Each step gets a screenshot pulled from your video at that exact moment.
- Edit any line as plain text. Your edits save as you go.
- The preview is laid out as the real printed pages, so nothing shifts on download.
Every project can also become a written guide. Guided Documentation turns the same recording or deck into a step-by-step document, with a screenshot and a short instruction for each step, and you download it as a PDF.
It is the same work you already did, in a second format. People who would rather skim than watch get something to skim.
Opening it
Open a project and switch from the video view to Guided Documentation. Click generate and ScreenDub writes the document from your project.
What you get
- A cover page with your title.
- Numbered steps, each with a screenshot from that moment and a short instruction.
- A closing page.
The screenshots are taken from your own video at the exact moment each step happens, so the pictures match the words.
Editing the text
Click any line and rewrite it. Editing is plain text on purpose: no fonts, no formatting, no moving blocks around. The document keeps its shape and you own the words.
Your edits save as you go.
The preview is the PDF
What you see on screen is laid out as the real printed pages, measured the same way the PDF is. The sheets stay white even in dark mode, because they stand in for paper. Nothing shifts when you download.
Missing screenshots
If a step has no picture, use Capture screenshots. ScreenDub goes back to your video and grabs the frames it is missing. This is also the fix if you generated the document before the video finished processing.
Other languages
Change the document language and the whole guide is translated, the same way narration is. The screenshots stay as they are. See Translating narration.
Your branding
On paid plans your logo and brand color appear on the cover and through the document. See Customizing the look.
Downloading
Click Download PDF. The file is built in your browser, so it takes a moment on a long guide. The result is a normal PDF you can email, print, or attach to a help article.
Next steps
Deliver the video itself in Downloading your video.
